Dr. Nurminsky believes the preventive care is fundamental in maintaining oral health of our patients. Proper and timely dental cleanings, assessment of patient's efforts and abilities to stay healthy, and corrections to the dental hygiene will help prevent development of unpleasant and potentially costly problems.
Dental plaque, a film of bacteria present in the mouth, constantly forms on teeth and in the pockets naturally present between your teeth and gums. When not removed properly, and especially when aided with sugary meals and drinks, plaque will destroy teeth through a process known as dental caries. In addition, even a minor amount of plaque accrues minerals from the saliva, gradually forming a hard pellet called calculus or tartar. Accumulation of calculus makes teeth rough and hard to clean, creating a trap for food and plaque that causes gum inflammation and may lead to periodontal disease.
Examination of oral health is recommended every six months to detect the problems at earliest stage, when their correction may be less invasive and not as costly. We will ask you to update your medical history in order to be abreast of any developments in general health that may have effect on oral conditions, and vice versa. We will then listen carefully to your concerns regarding your mouth, and will tailor the exam to make sure these concerns are addressed.
Dr. Nurminsky will perform a thorough screening for signs of oral cancer, and evaluate jaw joints (TMJs). We will measure the depth of pockets between your teeth and gums to determine whether they are shallow enough for regular cleaning or, otherwise, indicate the need for periodontal treatment. Because not all tooth structures are visible by eye, we will take digital X-rays as necessary to analyze your teeth for integrity and to detect developing problems. Quite often, tooth decay caught at the very early stage can be stopped by appropriate changes in dental hygiene and diet, without the need for fillings. Based on the comprehensive assessment, Dr. Nurminsky will give recommendation for oral hygiene and if needed, prescribe treatments to reach an acceptable condition. Please remember that your best interest comes first in our judgment, and that achieving and maintaining oral health through a cooperative effort between our staff and the patient is our continuing goal.
